The Absinthe Made Me Do It

I never thought I'd say this {and why would you even think of it...} but last night I tried chocolate covered bacon! Yes, you heard, or actually read right: crispy bacon dipped in a thick layer of rich chocolate. And no I wasn't at some Diner around the corner, dedicated to fried oreos and snickers. I went to the Pernod Absinthe party where high fashion and art mixed with psychedelic drinks. I thought Absinthe was illegal in the US, but if Pernod is introducing it, I guess times have changed! First time I tried it I was in Prague and thought it was liquid fire, so this time I made sure i had a really diluted version of it with plenty of sugar and water... But enough about drinking and more about the fashion. The reason I went to the party on the first place was Fay Leshner {a former Accessory Design student of mine from Parsons} who created the red feather head-piece, worn by the model in the Absinthe presentation.

True to her creative spirit, Fay sported a seat-belt {literally} over her glam gown.

Guest Post - Automatism

Tribute to Haiti

With the devastating news of the earthquake in Haiti dominating our attention I just wanted to post some of the most reputable links for donating aid to the disaster area and give a nod to some Haitian designers. I'm sure you already know Wyclef earthquake fund yelehaiti.org and RedCross.org I just would like to suggest to donate to reputable organizations dedicated to saving lives. CNN offers a comprehensive list {here}. Some designers are already showing support by donating a percentage of their sales to support these efforts. Some Etsy sellers are tagging their creations with "Haiti Relief" to donate proceeds to different funds. Here are some of them. I'll keep updating as I find them

Inspiration for a Stylish Look - Naoki

I just got my hair cut really really short, and even though I don't have a photo to show you yet I have something even better. I have photos of a stylish Japanese award winning hair stylist/ color specialist for you. I met him while I was getting my haircut at my favorite Japanese salon YUI salon on 323 West 11th St in NYC. Meg is the best! Love you! While I was sitting in the chair I noticed a super stylish guy with a bright necktie and an unusual tie knot. I had to talk to him and take some photos so I can show you. Unfortunately all I had with me was my iPhone, but the photos came out pretty good anyway.

Here is what Naoki does to achieve this look: he folds the tie in two and then wraps it around his neck and pulls through the fold, leaving the tail end of the tie really short. Simple but fun, and effective, don't you think! Naoki was also wearing hand-painted canvas shoes. Take a look:

And if you wanted to know more about Naoki Douzono, I should tell you that he is quite famous in Japan and has won the prestigious Japan Hairdressing Award for Tokio. Normally he works in HIROIN salon in Japan, but he visits the YUI salon every other month to work with clients in NYC. His website is in Japanese, so I couldn't understand most of it, but his portfolio is spectacular. You can see it at d-standard.com. Here is a shot of it.

3 BobbinTalk New Year's Resolutions You might Like

This past year has been a turbulent one and I am sure most of you, just like me, have gone through some tough times. I lost my job as an accessory designer at Ralph Lauren, but I gained a book contract with Fairchild Publications. Without a regular, daily job I still got to get out of the house, teaching my accessory design classes at Parsons, but really spent most of my time behind the computer writing the book. And let me tell you: the quiet and slow birthing of a book could be really lonely! I started a blog {yes, the one you are reading right now} AND got a Twitter account, AND very recently started a YouTube channel, YES I spent wayyy to much time online, BUT thanks to all of the above I made lots of online friends and actually met some of them in real life. So here are my resolutions for the new year:

1. I shall meet and get to know more of you guys! Yes, I'll get out of the house more {Yay, the first book draft is pretty much finished}. Send me an invite to a fashion or art related event in NYC and I'll be there, with my camera, I promise!

2. I promise to bring you some fun fashion videos. There will be some How-To's and fashion book reviews and behind the scenes and interviews with designers.

3. I will finally get the Accessory Design Online courses rolling. The website is already up at FashioneTutor.com and I have most of the content ready. It's based on the college level Accessory Design textbook I just wrote for Conde Nast/Fairchild Books, which isn't coming out till 2011.(I know it's corny to mention it twice in this post, but what the hell, I still can't believe it myself)  You guys would have an exclusive opportunity to benefit from from experience and the all the info I gathered during my research. All I have to do is load it up and figure out the logistics. So for any of you who would like to learn more about  inspiration, design, sketching, and manufacturing accessories this will be very helpful!

All in all, I'll be concentrating more on you! So don't hesitate to comment, email me and suggest anything you'd like to know about the business of fashion and accessories. Also I've been struggling with how personal this blog needs to be. Should I reveal more of myself or not. I've decided to come out a bit more as long as it has to do with fashion peeks and showing you how things work behind the scenes.

So... to a Fantastic, Happy, and Successful 2010!!! May all your dreams come true this year!

This is by far my favorite window display at Bergdorf Goodman this year, purely based on the insane workmanship. How many newspapers have I thrown out!? All the art pieces that didn't get created?! Ha! I don't think so! I'm just going to enjoy what the pros can do!

Just realized I didn't take a close up of the rabbit in the bottom right part of the window. But I caught the cat peaking from the top left corner. Don't you love that special Cheshire grin :-D

Bergdorf Goodman Holiday Windows '09-Part I

The Bergdorf Goodman windows are always amazing, but this year they are spectacular! I unfortunately picked one of the coldest nights to go and see them and my fingers almost fell off frozen trying to photograph them, needless to say I didn't truly enjoy them. The painstaking attention to detail and incredible work put behind them has paid off. If you get a chance you really must go see them. I know I am going back on a sunny December day to gasp again! There are so many details in the different scenes I'll split the photos into posts for each window. In no particular order here is the first window:
