The LOOMLAB project came highly recommended to me by Christina DiBernardo. LOOMLAB’s first collection, EXPERIMENT 1, is a study on the interpretation of visual languages. Languages such as Braille, binary codes, circuitry and QR coding inspire graphic designs, both hand woven, embroidered and printed. Starting to sound to complicated? Just take a look at the photos below and you'll know what they are experimenting with. It's quite clever!
If your imagination is tickled, here's more for you from Jane Henry {the chief "scientist" of this collection}:
BT: What is this experiment=collection about?
Jane: Here are the EXPERIMENT 1 Highlights:
FW-9008B - Decode the QR code print and it means LOOMLAB
FW-9010B – Braille poetry – the Braille is flocked to create texture. When
decoded, it tells the poem of a favorite childhood poet.
BT: Why math?
Jane:: I have always had a strong passion for creative expression and design. An art school grad who loved math? It is no wonder my creative left and methodical right brains were in constant conflict. The result: A scarf line that is influenced by both creative design and process and developed down to the microscopic detail.
BT:: What's next for LOOMLAB?
Jane: Part of what I envision is the LOOMLAB Laboratory: Testing Ground for design interaction. The idea is to build design interaction through various social and creative experiments.
With the official launch this fall, LOOMLAB is embarking on EXPERIMENT 1.
In addition, the laboratory operates in the more traditional sense as a testing ground for future seasons: new yarns, reactive inks, new printing processes and a think tank for inventive design concepts.
BT: Thank you Jane! I feel the need to go back to school, or better yet to get a LOOMLAB scarf!
